Invader

An invasive lionfish stalks around the sea floor.

Despite their beauty, the story of lionfish in the Caribbean is a tragic one. They are an invasive species, and have been decimating native fish populations. I captured this specimen moments before its death. A diver speared it with a speargun and left it to be devoured by the fish it would otherwise have hunted. Though this sounds like a brutal practice, it is necessary for the health of the native species of Caribbean reefs.
